Singapore is a melting pot bubbling over with tourists, inhabitants and expatriates from all parts of the world, and these people naturally have diverse eating habits. Through the ages, the Chinese, Malay, Indians and the foreigners (westerners) have cast their influence on Singapore’s food recipes and there is no doubt that Singapore is a food lovers’ paradise.

Singaporeans love to eat out and there is a feast of multicultural cuisine waiting for them in restaurants and especially in hawker centers and food courts. Here is a list of the major types of foods you can feast on in Singapore:

1. Malaysian Food: Malaysian food, also known as Malay food, is a popular in Singapore simply because Malaysia is Singapore’s neighbor and there are a whole lot of Malaysians living there; Spicy Malaysian gravies are laced with belachan, which is made from baby shrimps and the Malaysian desserts are usually based on coconut milk, palm sugar and freshly grated coconut. Then, of course, there are the rice and noodles too, which any Malaysian cannot live without. All these go to make an exotic eating experience. Some Malaysian food you must try out in Singapore: Laksa (coconut-based gravies) and Satay (grilled and skewered meat).

2. Chinese Food: The Chinese have been in Singapore since the last seven centuries and their influence on Singapore’s food recipes is authoritative. Chinese food can be subtle and neutral (Cantonese), or it can be fiery (Szechuan). Rice is a staple food in any Chinese dish and you can try out the following dishes to get a flavor of the Chinese influence: Shark fin soup, spring rolls (Cantonese – subtle taste); Fried Hokkien Mee (vermicelli, noodles, chili gravy, garlic, prawns, pork and everything else); and, Teochew food such as steamed fish and braised duck.

3. Indian Food: South Indians (mostly Tamilians) migrated to Singapore in the 1940s and their influence on Singaporean cuisine is undeniable. In fact there is an area in Singapore (around Serangoon Road), which is know as Little India. You must try out the south Indian Dosas, Idlis, Vadas that are served with spicy gravy and chutneys as well as the north Indian Tandoori Chicken (chicken smothered with a spicy paste and cooked in a clay oven).

4. Nyonya Food: Nyonyas are half-Malay, half-Chinese people who cook very hot and spicy food loaded with ginger and turmeric. Their recipes are creative and the cooking methods are elaborate. Some of the famous Nyonya dishes you must savor are: Enche kabin (small chicken pieces marinated in soy and oyster sauce) and Chicken Kapitan (chicken curry made using tamarind juice, candlenut, fresh turmeric root and belachan (shrimp paste)).

These apart, Singapore also offers western cuisine comprising of American, British, and Italian dishes. There are fast food centers, food courts, hawker centers, restaurants and you-name-it. As we said earlier, Singapore’s food recipes cater to all kinds of food lovers. Bon Appetit.

Lee Kuan Yew - First Premier of Singapore

When Lee Kuan Yew resigned as Prime minister of Singapore in 1990 it was the end of the reign of a tiger; a man who took no prisoners in his drive to the top. Serving his country from 1959 until 1990, he was the longest serving prime minister of any country at that time.

Had it not been for the Japanese occupation of Singapore it is doubtful that he would have led his country, but that occupation had such a profound effect on him that it completely changed the course of his life. He was determined that no foreign power would ever again control his country and that his countrymen would never again be “the playthings of a foreign power”. His treatment by the Japanese was such that this burning ambition remained with him always.

After the war he was educated in England as a lawyer and on his return to Singapore joined the pro-British Progressive Party, for which he acted as an election agent in the 1951 elections. However, Lee was born of Chinese parents, and had a Chinese attitude to life and politics and realized, correctly, that no party could succeed in Singapore without the support of the Chinese working class, even though the majority at that time was not allowed to vote.

His opportunity came in 1953 when the Rendell Commission allowed all local born Singaporeans to have the vote, which enfranchised millions of Chinese-speaking voters. Lee Kuan Yew founded the People’s Action Party in 1954, a leftist party that formed an alliance with the trades unionists. The Communist Part was illegal in Malaysia, so the pro-communist trades unions considered an alliance with a respectable political party to be to their advantage. The British members of the PAP needed the support of the Chinese trade unionized masses to help them gain power, and both sides had the same objective of self government for Singapore and the removal of British rule.

Lee was appointed Secretary General of the People’s Action Party, and held that post until 1992, well after his retirement from national office. Thanks to the support of the Chinese-speaking masses, he was elected into the Legislative Assembly in 1955, and after his party won the next election, he became the first prime minister of his country in 1959. However, this was only the start of his work, not the end.

Lee ran a very tight ship. He possessed the Chinese trait of strict discipline and obedience of orders. When he took office he found the political scene to be full of corruption and he stamped this out immediately. He accepted no argument or criticism, and had no hesitation in destroying anybody who stood against him. The way he cut out corruption was to make it illegal, and he appointed an agency that enforced these laws rigorously. He was a tenacious fighter who left anybody who opposed him beaten. He enforced strict discipline and complete intolerance of disobedience. If you agreed with him you were fine. If not . . .

He had a typical attitude towards the severe housing shortage that existed when he took over the reins of power. He instituted a building program that increased state ownership of affordable housing from below 10% to over 90%. He invested in his country’s industry to provide employment to everybody, and the ability to afford the housing. Anybody who opposed him was politically destroyed. He could not be beaten. He was tenacious and refused to be beaten in anything he believed was right for his country. He abhorred corruption.

However, although the standard of living improved dramatically in Singapore, he was described by some as a despot and criticized by others for his autocratic approach to democracy. Examples quoted were his intolerance of political demonstrations and his restriction in the freedom of the press. Lee firmly believed, however, that the end justified the means. Examples of the way he handled dissent include bankrupting opponents and the use of the courts to settle personal disputes. He never lost! He did not believe in open debate, but in absolute rule if the end justified it.

He announced his retirement when he reached 65 in 1988, but did not hand over power to Min Goh Chok Tong until 1990. He held the position of Senior Minister as an advisor until 2004 when he took up the position of Senior Mentor, a position created for him.

Although he was authoritarian, a strong character was what Singapore needed to pull it out of the quagmire into which it had sunk after the Japanese occupation and then its reoccupation by the British. Singapore owes him a lot, and a weaker man could not have achieved what Lee Kuan Yew did for his country.

Singapore is one of the world’s most successful countries and until recently had strict laws on gambling that restricted the development of casinos in the small city-state. However, with recent changes in the law, Singapore casinos will soon be among the world’s most spectacular leisure developments, and plans are afoot to create what is expected to be the most expensive casino and leisure complex in the world. This can only increase the desirability of Singapore as a destination for tourists visiting Southeast Asia and bring more revenue into the country.

Until late 2004, the government of Singapore had tight restrictions on gambling, which meant that there were no casinos in the country. However, there has been a growing realization that casinos are a valuable tourist attraction bringing in welcome revenue, as well as creating jobs for the local economy, and so the rules have been relaxed, paving the way for the building of the country’s first casino. The bidding process involved companies from all over the world, and following this period, the Las Vegas Sands Company was selected to build and operate the first of two planned super casinos in Singapore.

The vision for the first of the two huge Singapore casinos is a staggering one; not just a place to gamble, but an entire entertainment district, comprising shopping and leisure amenities, convention facilities, theme parks, theaters, and even museums; an integrated vision that will cost more than $3 billion and is expected to create over 30,000 jobs. The development will be sited on over 50 acres of reclaimed land at the city’s waterfront, and it is expected to be completed by 2009. The government is keen to promote Singapore casinos to the large numbers of tourists that visit the country every year, particularly as several other Asian countries are expanding their own casino sectors to cater to visitors, as well as demand from their own public. Indeed, Chinese people are known for their love of gambling, and this applies no less to Singaporeans of Chinese descent, who make up over three quarters of the indigenous population.

A second Singapore casino development is planned for Sentosa, a tourist island off the coast of Singapore, which attracts around two million visitors every year to enjoy its beaches, golf courses, and leisure facilities, not to mention its historical sites including Fort Siloso, a fortification used by the British during the Second World War. As with the first Singapore casino, the Sentosa casino will form the centerpiece of a massive integrated resort designed to attract tourists from around the world and further cement Singapore casinos at the forefront of the Asian tourist market.

Visiting Singapore - A little red dot …

It was many years ago now but my recollections are still strong one of the first things you noticed in getting off the plane and into the huge Changi airport terminal is that its hot. Once you get through the hustle and bustle of a major connecting terminus you make it to the street and then you discover how air conditioned the terminal is, like opening an oven the tropical heat hits you. Singapore is situated almost on the equator so its HOT. Getting a taxi to Orchid Avenue the main tourist Hotel drag was not hard and it takes a little while to reach your hotel bed in the busy traffic. Hey over 3 million people squeezed into a small Island your bound to have a problem or two. Like all Singaporeans the driver spoke English - what dialect I’m not entirely sure, but he ensured me it was grade A+ English - I’ll have to take his word for it because I couldn’t understand much of what he said.

You generally get in a Hotel what you spend. In Singapore I think they are the master of the three day stopover or less as the Hotel’s seem to be set up as a place to lay your head and not much else.

Singapore hardly sleeps at all and it seems you can go out at almost any time and find thousands of people around. There were a lot of police around but we were approached by some shady characters who promised a special good deal just around the corner late at night - we were pretty sure their special good deal consisted of robbing us blind - literally - so we stayed on the main drag where you are very safe. Singapore has some very strict laws so be on your best behavior unless being cane on your rear end has some sort of sick appeal to you - though be warned people have died from this punishment, or maybe it was the heart attack from the accompanying huge fine, either way don’t be stupid, don’t spit or do anything you think is a huge laugh in an intoxicated state. Before we think too harshly about their laws remember tight law and order is needed on such a small Island with few natural resources which survives on hard work and being a major transit center for Asia and the rest of the world. The city is kept relatively clean considering the size of the population.

There is plenty of shopping in Singapore and you can haggle the price down but compared to places like Thailand or Vietnam you are unlikely to find a bargain. If you are going on in your travels to another part of Asia, keep your wallet in your pocket for a cheaper country. To be honest most items I could buy cheaper in Australia. The fun part of the shopping is not so much in the buying but the visiting the lots of little ethic enclaves. Little India, China Town, Malaysian and many more the different spice and herb smell alone are worth walking around the city. We walked all over the place. If your feet get tired their are buses and a mass transit railway. It can be fun to take the train to the end of the line. Even here every building is a high rise. I saw a huge section of grass and thought it was a park, yet no one what playing on it. I soon found out why, I ran across it and starting sinking half way to the knee in water. I guess I had something to learn about the tropics and drainage.

For those that love to eat Singapore prides itself in being the food capital of Asia, with Chinese, India, Malay, Thai and more it certainly offers much variety. Just be careful where you eat, least you enjoy the experiences of visiting the toilet every five seconds.

There are lots of other tourist type things to do, visit Singapore’s top notch zoo, the butterfly and insect park, underwater world. There is also Sentosa Island, catch the huge cable car - its a massive drop to the water below and don’t worry they have only had a cable car crash once! Here you can learn about Singapore’s history in particular World War Two. Visits to the temples (remove shoes) provides colorful and interesting experience, especially the sri thandayuthapani temple.

A stop over in Singapore adds interest to any trip over seas and you can pack a lot into three days. I enjoyed my time there and will visit again.

I had the interesting experience later in the trip of passing over Singapore at night at 30,000 feet and could see the whole Island lit up below me. It looked beautiful, yet small and even from 30,000 feet it looked busy. Congratulations to all Singaporeans who through hard work have created a hub in Asia.

One might think that the women of Singapore would be similar to other Asian women. However, upon giving the cultures a second look, most are surprised to know that Singapore women are quite independent. In fact, this is one thing many Western men find very attractive, although it does seem to annoy the more traditional men of Singapore quite a bit. Singapore women today are more focused on education and their career. They are not rushing into marriages at young ages and are waiting later in life to have children. Some people think this is a huge mistake and worry about the culture of Singapore declining as a result. In fact, they often blame the Western world for influencing their young women to be more independent. The truth is that women in Singapore are just not as interested in getting married anymore. If they are not married and have started a family by the age of 30, they will never likely do it. At that age, they are already in an established career and would have to give so much up to have the family they may not even want to have. So, they are using their rights to choose not to marry. Strong character is one of the most attractive features of today’s Singapore women. They are even entering the world of politics and are being welcomed with open arms by most of the male politicians. These women know that they need to act like equals to men in order to be seen as equals and are willing to sacrifice to do so.

Why is it that many men love Singapore women? Well, there are many reasons why a man from Asia or even a man from the Western world would love to be with a Singapore woman. Take a look at these reasons why most men love their Singapore women and figure out the rest for yourself! Beauty

Let’s face it, when it comes to men, beauty is almost everything. In fact, many men won’t give an ugly girl a second look. Singapore ladies are some of the most beautiful ladies in the world. They have that signature Asian look, without being too ethnic in style. They have perfect skin and hair and almost always are at a perfect weight. One main reason men love these women is because they are physically attractive.

Strength Another reason why many men love Singapore women is because they are strong in character. They love the idea of a woman fighting for what she believes in. Women in Singapore today are not simply sitting back and letting men rule the world and some men find that fact very thrilling and attractive. In fact, they are getting into politics and other worldly issues.

Purity Although women from Singapore are strong and are fulfilling their own personal plans, while many times putting tradition aside, they are still pure in nature. This is something that many men find ultimately attractive. Women will save themselves for their future husband, which is what many men are looking for. So, even though they are out there doing their own things, they still uphold the strongest values.

History of Singapore - in a Nutshell

Situated at the southernmost tip of the Malay Peninsula with a land area of 685.4 km2, Singapore is an island-state with a 4.2 million population. It consists of one main island and 63 islets, some of the more well-known ones being: Pulau Tekong, Pulau Ubin, St John’s Island, Kusu Island, Pulau Hantu, Jurong Island. Pulau means “island” in Malay.

Modern Singapore was founded by Sir Stamford Raffles in 1819 when it was little more than a swamp. Only until the “rightful” Johorean heir agreed to sell the island to the British that it became a colony. Widely known and recorded by many sojourners as Temasek - Sea Town - by the 14th century, Singapore was a thriving vassal state of the Sri Vijayan empire.

Legend has it that a Palembang prince called Sang Nila Utama was responsible for the present-day name, Singapura meaning Lion City. In Sanskrit and Malay, Singa = Lion + Pura = City. It was while seeking refuge from a storm with his entourage that Sang Nila Utama spotted a mousedeer - which he was told a lion. But lions’ natural habitat is the grassy plains or the savannah, not jungles.

As the British had ruled Singapore for about a hundred and forty years till 1963, one of the legacies is the English Legal System. As well as English which is the language of administration, business and instruction in schools from kindergarten upwards. In addition to Malay, Mandarin and Tamil that make up the official languages of the country.

Furthermore, Malay is the national language as enshrined in the Constitution. This is partly in recognition of the indigenous status of the Malays. The national coat of arms depicts a lion and a tiger, the latter indicating Singapore’s historical links to Malaysia. This is a visual reminder to Singaporeans that they cannot severe their ties with Malaysia. Even many Malaysian Malays still view Singapore as Malay territory till today.

What is more interesting is a Dutch economist who developed Singapore’s economic blueprint; helping the country to attain success. The late Dr Albert Winsemius, who passed away in 1996, was appointed as the country’s Chief Economic Advisor from 1961 to 1984.

There you have it, Singapore’s history in a nutshell.

Singapore - The Fine City

Singapore is famous for being the cleanest city in the world. Tourists will be astonished and impressed by the strict rules and regulations formed by the Singapore government. There are many posters in buildings and parks telling people what they should do, what they shouldn’t do and how much they will be fined if they break the rules. That is the reason why Singapore is called “the fine city”.

The Singaporean government wants to establish a clean and green country where all citizens are well educated and are considerately to others. Therefore they have set many strict rules as well as put a lot of instructions and reminders in public places so that people always remember what they aren’t allowed to do and everything is orderly. Children are taught at school and in their family, right from very early ages, about what they should do and how to behave in this society.

If you are a tourist visiting Singapore, you should be considerate and pay attention to every one of your actions. There are many things considered normal in your country but which are illegal in Singapore. You will be fined heavily if you litter or smoke in public places. Also remember to flush public toilets after using it so that you aren’t fined S$500.

It is summer and you enjoy lying on the beach sunbathing. However, if you are in Singapore, you mustn’t go nude or topless when sunbathing, even if it is your own back yard. It is forbidden in Singapore and you will be fined if you’re caught doing that.

Chewing gum is not forbidden in Singapore but bringing gum into the country in large amount is illegal and the gum seller can be sent to jail. Therefore, be careful with what you bring to Singapore. You can find more information about what is not allowed to be brought into Singapore by visiting the Singaporean customs’ website.

Drugs are strictly forbidden in Singapore. People trafficking, manufacturing, importing or exporting more than 15g of heroin, 30g of morphine, 30g of cocaine, 500g of cannabis, 200g of cannabis resin and 1.2kg of opium are sentenced to death. Possessing these amounts is also regarded as trafficking and equals a death penalty. Therefore you must not get involved in drugs in Singapore by any means.

Thanks to the strict laws of Singapore, this country is very safe and orderly. There is virtually no crime, no corruption and you are safe even when walking alone at night. There may be some pickpockets in crowded places. However, they are rare unlike any other Asian countries.

Every year a large number of tourists are fined during their stay in Singapore because they are unaware of the strict rules and regulations. You should read about its rules and regulations carefully before going there and be aware of every board, poster or sign you see. Being a decent person and showing your respect to others, you won’t encounter any problems and will have an enjoyable stay in this clean country.

The Peranakan Heritage of Singapore

The early Chinese community who settled in the Malay Archipelago from the 17th century are known as the Peranakans. The Singapore Peranakan is a rich blend of the Malay and Chinese cultures. Many people in Singapore also called Peranakans as Babas and Nyonyas ( male and female Peranakans respectively )

Baba culture is an amazing and unique creation of South East Asia. For many centuries , Baba culture has managed to maintain many ancient Chinese traditions while at the same time adopting many customs of the land they settled in. This culture has some influence from the Portuguese , British , Dutch , Thai , Indian and the Indonesian cultures as well.

Sarongs and Kebayas are the popular costumes of Babas and Nyonyas . Though of Malay origins , these are often embroidered with Chinese motifs to distinguish themselves from their Malay counterparts. The most popular costume pieces among Nyonyas and others alike , are the colorful beaded handbags and shoes. This tedious and painstaking work that uses mainly the needle and thread needs months and years of practice to achieve perfection. Golden hairpins and other wide array of jewelery are also worn by the Nyonyas on a daily basis.

The Peranakans consider food and cooking an accomplishment. Nyonya cuisine indicates strong Malay , Indonesian and Indian influence , as seen by the curries and condiments usually found on a Baba family table. Nyonya food is a synthesis of many tastes.
