The Little Red Dot
Look at the little red dot on the map called Singapore
The former Indonesian President Habibi in an unfriendly speech once called Singapore ‘ the little red dot ‘. It is indeed true that Singapore is just a little dot on the world map. It is a tiny nation without natural resources , located in South-East Asia at the southern tip of the Malaysian Peninsula , between Malaysia and Indonesia. It has a total area of 632.6 square kilometer and has 193 km of coastline.
Little Red Dot is now a unique brand name and is proudly acknowledged by all Singaporeans as evidence that Singapore’s importance and progress is far greater than warranted by its size. It is amazing how this little red dot on the globe and a vulnerable little country has become a prosperous , stable and respected member of the international community.
Before the 1960’s Singaporeans had no identity of their own. When the People’s Action Party came into power in 1959 the future and prospects for Singapore were somber.
The outside world gave Singapore little chance of survival when it was granted independence in 1965. How is it , then , that today this Little Red Dot is a thriving Asian metropolis with not only the world’s number one airline , best airport , and busiest port of trade , but also the world’s highest per capita real income ?
