Singapore F1 Race

Singapore F1 - first night race.

Singapore’s bid to host Formula One’s first night race has entered the final race with only a few more obstacles to be overcome. It is almost there.

The event will be held at the Marina Bay area on Sept 28 2008. Work has begun on the construction phase of the pit lane building for the new Singapore grand prix , just over one year before the inaugural race. The facility along Singapore’s waterfront will hold 36 garages for 12 racing teams on the ground floor.

The race will consist of a 3.25 mile long street circuit, passing Singapore landmarks including a giant observation wheel that is set to be the world’s largest upon its completion in February.

Singapore based 3D visualization company G Element has built the proposed Singapore Grand Prix route in 3D using Google Earth. Internet users can download the route at www.earthsg.com and open it through Google Earth. Among such features include the opportunity to get to know Singapore’s famous landmarks and it’s stunning colonial architecture , its vibrant waterfront area on the edge of the Singapore River and the sparkling skyscrapers of Singapore’s business district.

This very first F1 Singapore Grand Prix , which will bring thousands of motor-sport enthusiasts to the Lion City. It will be the first night race on the F1 circuit and is expected to draw a sell-out crowd of 100,000. It will surely boost Singapore’s global recognition with a potential audience of 500-million people watching a race that will pass modern skyscrapers, colonial-era buildings and the country’s Marina Bay waterfront.

F1 boss Bernie Ecclestone is pushing for several night races on the calendar - especially in Asia , to increase television viewership figures in North America and Europe. The announcement of Singapore as a host city reinforces F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone’s belief that the region is a key cog in the sport’s future development.

Many are apprehensive about the safety aspects. Race cars , which can hit speeds of more than 300 kilometers per hour , cannot be fitted with headlights , as they affect aerodynamics , which are all-important in a sport where tenth of a second makes a world of difference.

Track lighting , therefore , will have to replicated daytime conditions , and this is difficult and costly to do. The Singapore authority would go all out to assure the Singapore F1 race would be safe.
